❝Our minds are like crows. They pick up everything that glitters, no matter how uncomfortable our nests get with all that metal in them.❞
─Thomas Merton
it’s difficult to be a dom with anarchist leanings.
my sub will be like “i have to tell you something… i broke a rule. i’ll accept whatever punishment you see fit.” and i’m like. rise up comrade you have nothing to lose but your padded restraints. no doms no masters. oh you want me to spank you. yeah i can do that.
So I’ve spoken before about how I used to be staff on a fairly popular discord server specifically for kink and specifically specifically for gay man kink.
It was a puppy server. And puppies are largely cis men, though we had a strict “all puppies are good puppies” rule and refused to gender-lock or sex-lock people out of enjoying themselves.
Now. I’m not really into this particular kink. I was hired to do art, and because a good friend of mine was good friends with the server owner/admin. But I still hung out with the users and got to make some mod choices because I was staff.
Do you know how many times I did effectively this? Just immediately start a puppy riot? One of the more toxic doms would be trying to flex or be bugging one of the younger members and I’d post something like ✊ rise up comrades it is time!!! Power to the pups!!! No treats no tail wags!!! ✊ and immediately the server would be an explosion of horny men in dog masks barking in text at the Asshole Dom who Did Not Realize that I was online and would do that.
Anyway the server owner thought it was hysterical and would participate in the Puppy Riots and deliberately kept me on staff because, and I quote, he liked that I would throw the server into literal anarchy mode in order to shut up the assholes and thus all the assholes would be quiet if they knew I was around.
And speaking of scurvy, I am eternally amused by the thing where some ancient form of healing that was born in a time where people didn’t know exactly how the human body works, or what causes it to stop working sometimes, that still somehow worked. Like how so many old folk medicinal plants were listed as a cure for various ailments that - from a modern view - are clearly just symptoms of scurvy, and the plant itself is rich in vitamin C.
I recall reading some story, no recollection of the exact time or place, where the king of a large empire suffered from constant horrible headaches and was incapable of falling asleep unless drugged or blackout drunk. Sick of taking temporary fixes to dull the pain and having to be sedated every night, he called up some old sage healer who was said to know how to fix things nobody else could explain, and the healer heard his symptoms and went
“Hmm. You spend too much time being a king. Your skull is packed so full of kingly thoughts that they don’t all fit in there and that’s why your head is in pain. You need to spend time not being a king.” And prescribed him to schedule three days every month where he must go to a peasant village where nobody knows he’s the king, live with a family there under a fake name and identity, work in the rice fields with them, eating the same food and sleeping on the same mats. Absolutely nobody is allowed to address him as the king, speak to him of any royal or political matters, and he himself is not allowed to think any kingly thoughts or think of himself as the king.
And naturally, this worked. Taking a regular scheduled break from a highly stressful office desk job to completely decompress, paired with physical exercise in the form of hard but simple physical labour, plain and simple food and Just Not Thinking About Your Fucking Job All The Time does help chronic stress, which here was worded as “spending too much time being a king clogs your brain.”
Sometimes you do have ghosts in your blood, though I’m not entirely sure whether you should do cocaine about it.
people trying to insist a fandom is tiny when it /only/ has a few thousand works on ao3 meanwhile my current fandom is a sixteen book series and has several hundred fewer works than goncharov, a movie that, and i cannot stress this enough, doesn’t even exist
one of the things that makes autism a disability (and why some of us choose to label it as such rather than an “alternate neurotype”) is the stress.
part of autism is just being incredibly stressed. overstimulation? stress. holding a conversation? stress. something happening to our schedule? stress. people talk about how often autism is recognized and diagnosed via our stress responses (like meltdowns) because it is just so common to see autistic people stressed because of lack of accommodations to how our brains work.
and this matters because stress kills. stress causes a lot of health issues, or it can trigger pre-existing ones by making certain chronic conditions flare up. i once had a psychiatrist very unhelpfully tell me i “just need to manage my stress” when the stress i was describing was things i could not avoid in neurotypical society and can’t “just get over”. i can do “self care” all i like but i cannot at the very base level change the way my brain inputs information and reacts accordingly.
i only learned this year that loud noises aren’t physically painful for other people. i have lived 34 years in a world in which my friends and family regularly physically hurt me at random just by shouting, and i thought everyone else just thought i was kind of a wimp for not dealing with the pain as well as they did.
like. loud noises physically hurt. it’s like a static shock from my ears to my spine that doesn’t stop until the volume goes back down. i thought we all agreed that ‘that’s too loud!’ and covering our ears meant ‘ouch!’. turns out i’ve been dealing with a stressor almost no one else has, my whole life, alone.
autistic people have to keep functioning through debilitating levels of stress that no one else in their life acknowledges or helps them with. it’s no wonder that their most visible ‘tells’ are breakdowns.
I need sci fi fans to please be normal about the Three Laws of Robotics. These are not a serious proposal about AI ethics – they’re a narrative logic puzzle created to facilitate writing detective stories about robots. They’re the sort of thing you’d invent to annoy Daniel Craig if you made a movie where Benoit Blanc goes to space.
What does that even mean? PDF as in Portable Document Format?
i cannot stress enough that i dont think yahoo even knew what a pdf was
(from the quartz link above)
honestly the fact that we survived this just proves you really can’t kill a cockroach or a very stubborn unprofitable website inhabited by gay monsterfuckers
idk who needs to hear this rn but suffering is not noble. take the tylenol
One time when I was younger I was refusing to take headache medicine and my mom said “the person who invented that medicine is probably so sad you won’t let them help you” and now every time I find myself denying medicine I just imagine the saddest scientist making those big wet eyes like “why won’t you let me help” and whoop then I take the medicine
scientist when you don’t take the medicine they developed to help your pain
As long as you are taking a SAFE dose of it, then it’s *good* for you. Pain is bad for the body. The inflammation from prolonged pain can worsen chronic issues and make it harder to heal.
Ibuprofen is best for pain that has inflammation, while acetaminophen doesn’t help with inflammation but is more broadly effective on other types of pain. As long as you are taking the recommended dose, you can even take them TOGETHER, since they have different mechanisms of action.
You do need to be aware of how much and how often you are taking any pain medication. Overdoses can be very painful (even lethal.) And if you are in chronic pain often enough that you need more than the safe dose, then you need to look into other medications to manage that pain.
(Also, if you are specifically taking Acetaminophen/Tylenol for your go-to pain management, getting some NAC and taking that with it reduces the risk of overdose AND may strengthen the effect.)
One other thing: NSAIDS (ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen being the three big ones) can cause digestive issues with chronic use, including stomach ulcers. That doesn’t mean “don’t take them,” it means “if you’re at the point where you’re on them all the time, every day, constantly, you should talk to a doctor about either reducing that risk or switching to another medication that doesn’t have those side effects.”
So our cat Ravioli sometimes does this thing we’ve started calling a Ravioli jumpscare where he’ll hide next to a door or behind a piece of furniture and wait for us to pass next to him and jump at us lifting both his front paws in the air. So sometimes I’ll be working on the living room while my husband is in the bedroom and he’ll notice the cat crouching down next to the door and he’ll be like “babe can you come in for a sec? The cat wants to jumpscare you”
Removing swears and slurs from the subtitles without removing it from the audio is implying that deaf/HoH people need babying, unlike their hearing friends and family sitting right next to them. Which is frustrating.
The point of subtitles is to give the same experience to everyone watching, regardless of ability—not to be a more palatable version of what’s being said.
